Training is offered through a three-tiered system of instruction:

Tier 1—Seminars/Forums:

Single-event sessions, generally focused on one topic. This format consists of several hours to a few days of instruction, with the intended goal of creating a heightened level of awareness of a particular issue or subject.

Tier 2—Workshops:

Single-event sessions consisting of three to fi ve days of instruction involving a series of topics and/or issues, intending to create awareness and deeper understanding of specific learning objectives. Workshops are designed as stand-alone training events or in conjunction with in-service training programs.

Tier 3—Core Academy Program:

The primary training delivery system for NRLA consists of multiple-event training sessions conducted over an extended period of several months encompassing each core curriculum category, including an applied learning practicum project. The curriculum emphasizes individual participant skill development and is available in two formats:

Individual Format Academy (IFA)—

A structured series of multi-day training sessions conducted in different issue-related locations over a period of approximately twelve months. It is designed for individual participants representing a variety of agency and community groups, and features detailed instruction in each core curriculum category. The program incorporates an individual or group applied learning practicum project and is limited to thirty participants.

Agency Format Academy (AFA)—

A structured series of multiple-event training sessions conducted for a specifi c agency. This delivery system includes customized instruction in core curriculum categories, and includes a mission-related collaborative learning practicum project unique to the participating organization. Class size based upon project scope.

NRLA-sponsored training is recognized through a process of training certifi cation and continuing education credit. Natural resource law enforcement professionals are eligible to receive career credit through the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission.
