ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The 8th International PGPR Workshop will bring together university, government and industry scientists interested in Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR). PGPR are root associated bacteria representing many different genera and species that colonize the rhizosphere and improve plant growth when introduced onto seeds, seedpieces, roots, or into soil. PGPR improve plant growth by one or more mechanisms: direct stimulation of plant growth; enhancement of nutrient uptake; suppression of plant pathogens; and/or induction of resistance in plant hosts against pathogens. Emphasis at the meeting is on both classical and state of the art PGPR and rhizosphere research presented by invited speakers and at poster sessions. Topics will include:
- mechanisms of PGPR activity
- interactions of PGPR in the rhizosphere
- bioactive metabolites in the rhizosphere
- plant responses to PGPR
- plant pathogen-PGPR interactions
- molecular communication in the rhizosphere
- biogeography of PGPR strains
- commercial application of PGPR
- PGPR research around the world
- new technologies in PGPR and rhizosphere research
- PGPR genomics and bioinformatics
Vigorous and lively discussions always underscore the workshop. The first PGPR Workshop was held in Canada in 1987 and since then the workshop has been held every three years at locations around the world: Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Argentina, India and The Netherlands. The 8th International PGPR Workshop will be the first one held in the U.S. The number of participants generally ranges from 100-150 and is a mix of established scientists, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students. Facilities are selected to promote group and one-on-one discussions during poster sessions and after meeting hours. Good food and drink is a tradition at the workshop to help lubricate the exchange of ideas in a relaxed setting.
